Helmut Emil Gerber was born on July 7, 1920 in Germany. He was educated at Rutgers University, New York University, and the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II, Gerber served as a Captain in U.S. Army Intelligence in the European Theater (1942-1946). He went on to teach at Lafayette College, Purdue University, the University of Texas at Arlington, Northern Illinois University, and Arizona State University.
